Carrot prices have plunged sharply in the Nilgiris, leaving farmers unable to recover even their harvesting costs. With procurement prices falling below ₹10 a kg, several farmers have left their mature crops unharvested and are seeking compensation from the government.

Hill vegetables, including carrots, beetroot, potatoes and cabbage, are grown on another 7,000 hectares.

As carrot crops in several parts of the district reached the harvesting stage, the northeast monsoon intensified in recent days, bringing heavy rainfall. Fearing that the carrots would rot in the fields, farmers rushed to harvest their produce.

The sudden increase in market arrivals, however, triggered a steep fall in prices. With carrots fetching less than ₹10 a kg, farmers say the returns are insufficient to cover harvesting expenses.

Consequently, several farmers have decided to leave their ready-to-harvest crops in the fields. Some are also considering ploughing the crops back into the soil without harvesting them.

Farmers have urged the government to provide adequate compensation for the losses caused by the sharp decline in carrot prices.
