Autorickshaw drivers in Coimbatore have welcomed the new fares announced by the Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday.

The president of the Coimbatore District Joint Committee of Auto Drivers Unions Selvam said the government should take steps to safeguard their livelihood.

The government announced a fare of ₹50 for the first 1.8 km and ₹25 for every additional kilometre.

The auto drivers’ unions had sought a minimum fare of ₹60 for the first 1.5 km and ₹30 for every subsequent kilometre.

Selvam also urged the government to provide digital fare meters free of cost to all auto-rickshaws and the app-based system should be implemented within six months.

He pointed out private operators such as Ola, Uber, Rapido and bike-taxi services had affected the earnings of auto drivers, pushing many into severe financial distress.

He also said bike-taxi services and other private app-based platforms were violating rules and urged legal action against them.
