The water level at Vaigai Dam near Andipatti in Theni district rose by more than two feet in a single day following continuous rain in its catchment areas. The inflow into the dam increased to 3,095 cusecs, bringing cheer to farmers.

The 71-foot-high dam is a major source of drinking water for people in Theni, Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts. It also supplies water for irrigation.

Continuous heavy rain in the dam’s catchment areas, including the Kottakudi, Moolavaigai and Mullaperiyar regions, has led to a rise in inflow.

The water level stood at 48.69 feet on Saturday, after rising by more than two feet in a day. Inflow increased from 1,265 cusecs to 3,095 cusecs, while the discharge from the dam stood at 86 cusecs. The storage was 1,826 million cubic feet.

With the northeast monsoon gaining intensity and more rain likely in the catchment areas, the water level is expected to rise further, bringing relief to farmers.

As the flow in the Vaigai river is gaining strength, the Public Works Department has cautioned people living near the river to remain vigilant and advised them not to cross the river or enter it to bathe.
