Severe cyclone likely over Bay of Bengal

The system is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on the forenoon of October 28.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast the possibility of a severe cyclonic storm developing over the Bay of Bengal and crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast near Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on the forenoon of October 28.

A low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression. It is highly likely to move northwestwards, intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm and position itself over the west-central Bay of Bengal, off the Andhra Pradesh coast, by the morning of October 28, the India Meteorological Department said.

The system is likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on the forenoon of October 28. Winds are expected to reach speeds of 115-125 kmph, with gusts of up to 140 kmph, the IMD said.

In view of the developing weather system and the possibility of rain accompanied by strong winds, the No.1 cyclone warning signal, indicating the formation of a distant storm, has been hoisted at the Nagapattinam port. Similar warning signals have been hoisted at nine ports, including Chennai, Cuddalore and Karaikal.

Sea conditions have turned rough, with waves rising slightly higher than usual. As strong winds are expected over the sea, a majority of fishermen in Nagapattinam and Karaikal districts have stayed ashore. Several mechanised and fibre boats have been berthed at fishing harbours.
