Tamil Nadu Energy and Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar said the State government was taking steps to speed up the solar rooftop scheme, improve electricity supply and provide new electricity connections without delays.

The minister chaired a meeting on the solar rooftop scheme and a review meeting with Electricity Board officials in Coimbatore on Monday. The first meeting was held at 10 a.m. at the Government College of Technology auditorium in Venkatapuram Pudur, with registered vendors and officials participating. A review meeting with Electricity Board officials followed at 11.15 a.m.

Speaking to reporters after the meetings, the minister said the solar rooftop scheme had earlier faced several problems, including confusion over where to apply, delays in receiving subsidies and delays of six months to 18 months in installing net meters.

To address these issues, a single-window online portal had been introduced, allowing people to apply for the State and Central government schemes through one platform. Work would be automatically allotted to one of the around 1,500 registered vendors in Tamil Nadu.

He said 30,000 applications had been received in the three weeks since the portal was launched. Although the government had set a target of installing the scheme in one lakh houses by March, he expressed confidence that the target could be achieved by January due to the strong public response. While Coimbatore had earlier received more applications, the number had now increased in Chennai.
