Tactile pathways win appreciations in Vellore

Vellore Cantonment railway station has won appreciation from visually impaired passengers for providing special tactile pathways to help them move around independently. They have urged the railway authorities to extend the facility to all railway stations.

The station was modernised at a cost of ₹8.6 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Facilities such as lifts, toilets and drinking water have been provided for passengers.

Special tactile pathways have also been laid to help visually impaired persons navigate the station. The facility has been widely welcomed by passengers with visual disabilities.

More than 3,000 visually impaired persons live in Vellore district, according to members of the community. Many of them earn their livelihood by selling items such as pens, purses, confectionery, mobile phone headsets, chargers and handkerchiefs on trains.

They said they often had to depend on other people or use walking sticks to enter railway stations and reach the platforms.

At Vellore Cantonment station, tactile pathways have been provided from the entrance to the ticket counters, platforms, staircases and the foot overbridge, making it easier for visually impaired passengers to move around.
The pathways enable them to navigate the station without assistance, they said.

The passengers urged the railway authorities to provide similar facilities comprehensively at all stations, including Katpadi.
