Avalpoondurai Lake in Modakurichi constituency will be desilted and developed as a tourist destination, Modakurichi MLA Shanmugam said.

Avalpoondurai Lake, spread over approximately 230 acres had been the subject of earlier attempts to develop it as a tourist destination. Although the lake was desilted, the project failed to achieve the desired results due to inadequate water inflow and poor maintenance of basic amenities.

The boathouse and children's park established at the lake have since fallen into disrepair.

The OliRum Erode Foundation has now come forward to beautify the lake using funds under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The foundation has proposed to undertake works worth approximately ₹20 crore, including desilting the lake, providing boating facilities and installing play equipment at the children's park. The works are expected to begin soon.
