Cotton mills’ body and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII Salem Chapter)

have welcomed the Centre's extension of the import duty exemption on cotton which has been granted to the domestic industry, saying that the industry is increasingly being hit by the gap between cotton production and consumption.

In a statement Durai Palanisamy, Chairman, South India Mills Association (SIMA) has urged the centre to extend the tariff up to 2030 on all types of cotton varieties.

After representations from stakeholders along the cotton textile value chain, the exemption has been extended from June 1st to October 31st.

Palanisamy congratulated the Prime Minister and the Union Ministers concerned for the decision, for the Textiles, Commerce and Industry, Agriculture and Finance ministries, respectively.

The temporary exemption of import duty allowed the industry to import about 72 lakh bales cotton for the 2025-26 season, which helped in addressing the deficit in the country's cotton production, he said, adding that it also helped save jobs and fulfil the export obligations.
