The weather office has issued a red alert in the popular tourist town of Kodaikanal as heavy rains continue to lash Tamil Nadu since the monsoon season began earlier this month.

A landslide occurred on the main Kodaikanal–Palani and Kodaikanal - Vathalagundu roads, causing rocks and boulders to roll onto the road and disrupting traffic.

On Sunday, authorities closed the road to tourist vehicles as a safety precaution, but supply vehicles struggled to get across damaged sections of the road.

Several trees came down along the scenic route as rains lashed the area continuously.

Emergency services deployed to the scene are on alert as more landslides could hit the route.

The downpours caused water level to surge in the Varadhamanathi Dam near Palani to its full capacity of 66.47 feet, prompting the release of surplus water into the river.

According to the rainfall report issued by the Dindigul district administration a total of 659.92 mm of rainfall, with an average of 65.99 mm was recorded Monday morning.

The Kodaikanal Rose Garden area, a major catchment zone for the dam, received 109 mm of rain, while Bryant Park recorded 42.12 mm and Palani received 54 mm.

To ensure its safety, the entire inflow is being released as surplus water into the Varadhamanathi river through the spillway gates.

The Public Works Department and police have warned residents living along the riverbanks and in low-lying areas against any activity in the area.

The Varadhamanathi Dam supplies drinking water to Palani municipality, Ayakudi town panchayat and more than 10 surrounding village panchayats.
