All 49 TASMAC outlets in the Nilgiris district remained closed until 2 p.m. on Sunday as employees staged a protest against the implementation of the empty liquor bottle return scheme and the introduction of UPI payments for purchases above ₹1,000.

The two measures came into effect across Tamil Nadu on Saturday. Employees opposed their implementation, claiming that the changes would affect their working conditions.

The closure led to long queues outside outlets in Ooty, Kotagiri, Coonoor and Gudalur. Though the shops were scheduled to open at noon, they resumed sales only at 2 p.m., following a two-hour delay.

TASMAC employees said the new measures had been introduced in haste without upgrading shop infrastructure, increasing the number of sales counters or putting in place arrangements to regulate queues.

They said talks held in the presence of the Senior Regional Manager had failed to produce an amicable settlement. However, after the management assured them that their demands would be addressed in phases, employees called off the protest and reopened the outlets across the district.
