Retail and wholesale sales have gathered momentum at the popular Erode textile market ahead of Diwali, with a steady increase in the number of shoppers and traders from neighbouring States.

The market, which began as a small trading centre near Panneer Selvam Park about 60 years ago, has grown into a major textile trading hub.

Shops operate along Gandhi Road, Brough Road, TVS Street, R.K.V. Road, Eswaran Koil Street and Meenakshi Sundaranar Road, besides the municipal grounds near Panneer Selvam Park, where over 200 shops function daily.

The weekly wholesale textile market operates from Monday afternoon to Tuesday evening, attracting traders from various parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Erode Gani Market Traders Association president Selvaraj said the market offered clothes at both wholesale and retail prices.

To benefit the public, retailers also sold garments at wholesale rates.

More than one lakh workers, including tailoring personnel and women workers, had been engaged in garment production over the past six months, contributing to increased supply and affordable prices, he said.

However, prices of textile products had increased by 5 to 20% compared with last year owing to higher yarn prices, labour charges, transportation costs and shop rents. With Diwali just a week away, traders expect sales to increase further over the coming days and expressed optimism about the festival business.
