Drivers of omni buses halted their vehicles mid-journey near Tirunelveli to protest against fines imposed on them on charges of overpricing tickets.

The buses, operating from Tirunelveli to destinations including Bengaluru and Coimbatore stopped their vehicles near Manimoortheswaram. At least 60 passengers were reportedly caught in the stand off.

Police arrived at the scene and held talks with the drivers. When the talks initially failed the police said action would be taken against the bus operators if they did not resume the journey.

Overcharging by omni bus operators when there is high demand for seats during festivals has been a long-running issue.

The authorities have ordered bus operators not to overcharge and follow ticketing guidelines issued by the government.

The omni bus network is believed to operate at least 6000 buses in Tamil Nadu across regional and interstate routes and carries up to three lakh passengers daily.
