Food Safety Department officials have issued notices to 11 fast-food outlets in Erode Corporation limits after inspections found unhygienic food preparation, improper use of monosodium glutamate (MSG), excessive use of artificial colours and banned plastic bags used for packaging.

Acting on complaints and directions from District Designated Officer G. Varalakshmi, Food Safety Officers Muthukrishnan, Kesavaraj and Selvan inspected several outlets. Officials said kitchens in some establishments were not maintained hygienically. MSG was allegedly used without the prescribed warning label, while artificial colouring exceeded permissible limits.

Notices were issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Recommendations have been sent to the District Designated Officer for further action, including penalties.
The inspections are part of a three-month enforcement drive in Erode district from September 1 to November 30. Food business operators have been told to maintain valid FSSAI registration or licences, keep kitchens and storage areas clean, and avoid reusing cooking oil, artificial colouring and prohibited plastic packaging.

The public can report food quality, hygiene and safety complaints through WhatsApp at +91 94440 42322.
