Three-phase nighttime power cut leaves farmers in lurch

The suspension of night-time three-phase power supply for more than 15 days has affected an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 farmers and other consumers relying on the service in Dindigul district, reports say.

According to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), the State has around 3.44 crore electricity consumers, of whom approximately 45.57 lakh have three-phase connections. Dindigul district alone has an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 consumers using three-phase power.

Across Tamil Nadu, three-phase power was earlier supplied between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. at night. During the day, the supply schedule varied by district, generally running from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. In all, consumers received around 14 hours of three-phase power a day, including eight hours during the day and six hours at night.

Farmers allege that the supply has now been reduced to around eight hours a day because of a power shortage and inadequate planning to meet demand.

Thousands of consumers across the State depend on three-phase electricity for their livelihoods. Small-scale industries, in particular, take up orders based on the availability of power at night. The suspension of night-time supply has affected production and made it difficult for them to deliver orders on time.

Farmers who depend on three-phase power to irrigate their fields have also been hit. The disruption could also affect drinking water supply, which relies on three-phase electricity in several areas.
